“A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops”- Henry Adams

October 5 is celebrated as the World Teachers’ Day in honour of all the teachers around the world. It celebrates the hardwork done by teachers in the field of education and their contribution in building a better society.

Teachers are the architects of a society and they influence each student in a unique way. The theme of World Teachers’ Day 2020 is ‘Teachers: Leading in crisis, reimagining the future.’ The Covid-19 pandemic immensely affected the education process and created new challenges for teachers across the globe. The pandemic created a sudden shift from classroom teaching to online teaching.  This created a special duty for teachers to provideremote learning and make education accessible to each and every student despite the shutdown of schools and colleges.

Why is it celebrated?

At a special intergovernmental conference held in Paris on October 5, 1966, the UNESCO proposed the celebration of World Teachers’ Day. Along with the International Labour Organisation (ILO), UNESCO, proposed the recommendation regarding the status of teachers.  This recommendation focused on the rights and responsibilities of teachers, including education, recruitment, employment, teaching and learning conditions. Then finally UNESCO announced October 5 as World Teachers’ Day in 1994.

Importance of World Teachers’ Day

Different countries celebrated Teacher’s Day on different dates, but after the declaration by the UNESCO, many countries around the world also switched the date to October 5. In India, Teacher’s Day is celebrated on 5th September to mark the birthday of the second president of India, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.  The importance of World Teacher’s Day is evident from the fact that teachers are considered nation builders as they are ones that have the most influence on the minds of young children who are the future of any nation. The importance of a good teacher can never be underestimated. A good teacher guides his pupils through the tunnel of darkness into the world of enlightenment.

World Teachers’ Day Celebrations

On this day the students give flowers and greeting cards to their favourite teachers. They stand in queue to hand it over to their favourite teachers. On this day students also dress up like their teachers and teach junior classes. This special day is celebrated with lots of enthusiasm by students and teachers across the world. This year, owning to the Covid-19 pandemic, the celebrations for World Teachers’ Day will take place online with a week-long series of virtual events.
