Gandhi Jayanti 2020- birthday of the “Father of the Nation”

Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated every year in India on 2nd October to mark the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, the "Father of the Nation", who lead to the freedom of India through his philosophies of ahimsa, i.e. Non- violence and peace.  This special day is celebrated as national holiday in India and on this day several prayer services are held all across the country and especially at Raj Ghat in New Delhi where Gandhiji was cremated.

Historical Background

The full name of Gandhiji was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and he was born on October 2nd 1869 in Gujarat, British India.

Gandhi believed that there was no need to fight or indulge in acts of violence to get freedom from British rule bust instead if people should follow Satyagrah and ahimsa ‘non-violence’ to get freedom. His life served as an example of practice of truth, non-violence, vegetarianism, simplicity and belief in God. He was one of the most prominent political and spiritual leaders within India, who lead masses to several movements that ultimately helped India attain freedom. Some of these movements were Satyagraha, civil disobedience, which were firmly based on the principles of total non-violence.

Activities held on the Occasion of Gandhi Jayanti

People across the country celebrate the day by holding prayer meetings and commemorative ceremonies in colleges, local government institutions and other such places. .

Schools also organize painting and essay competitions for students based on the themes of glorifying peace, non-violence and Gandhi's effort in Indian Freedom Struggle. Also awards are given to winners of the competitions Other than these things devotional song, Raghupathi Raghava Rajaram is sung in memory of Mahatma Gandhi.

Gandhiji’s philosophies were not limited to India but their impact was evident across the globe and that is why 2nd October is also celebrated as the International Day of Nonviolence in his honor.

  4. He was given the title of “Mahatma’ by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.
  5. Gandhi ji was born on Friday, India also got the freedom from British Empire on Friday and Gandhi ji was also assassinated on the same day i.e. Friday.
  6. The harijans were "children of God" in Gandhiji’s eyes and he also fought for their fair treatment also did several fast in support of them.

His role in Education

Gandhiji believed that to lead a successful life it is very important to education. Gandhiji wrote many articles on the topic of education and he believed that education is very important for the development and well being of individual s and also society. However, he did not favour religious instructions as part of formal education system in a country. He even explained the concept of Basic Education in various articles published in his Harijan magazine in 1937.

Based on these articles of Gandhiji, the scheme of Basic Education was formed under the leadership of Dr. Zakir Hussain in the conference held at Wardha. Among the several resolutions passed under the scheme included the medium of instruction should be mother tongue, free and compulsory education for all children up to the period of 7 years.

Thus Gandhiji played key role in the formation of Basic Education scheme of India. He was a pioneer in the freedom struggle and also in the education reforms taking place at that time in India.
