What comes to your mind when you think about toys? Chances are that they remind you of your childhood. From teddy bears, planes, helicopters to Spider man and Barbie dolls, toys come in numerous shapes and sizes and colours and make life interesting. However, this time the whole thing is different. The Education Ministry along with the related bodies have come out with a very innovative idea to make teaching and learning far more engaging and immersive. And the idea is to use toys as pedagogical tools.

Toys as Pedagogical Tool

The National Education Policy 2020 is meant to introduce a plethora of changes in the Indian education system. The latest among them is the inclusion of toys related to Indian culture in schools across the country. This is meant to provide immersive education to the children and also help in their all-round development.

Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ made an announcement regarding the same on social media. He stated that this step will contribute to the spirit of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat. He also mentioned that Kala Utsav will be held in which student will make indigenous toys. In this Kala Utsav puppet shows will also be organized for students at secondary and higher secondary level.

The students will also learn toy and puppet making skills under the Aatma Nirbhar Bharat Mission of the Ministry of Education in India. This decision is in line with the vision of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who wants that students of India should also be proficient in these skills.

Importance of Toys in Education

We all know that toys are engaging and when students learn with toys they will become more engaged in education. It will also make learning fun and interesting for them. The toys will be related to the culture and ethos of India. This will also make them familiar with the Indian culture. Also, it will increase the students’ interest in education and develop their motor skills, creativity and imagination.

The National Education Policy 2020 (NEP)

The Union cabinet gave approval to the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) on 29 July 2020. This Policy outlines the vision of new education system in India and is a replacement of the National Policy on Education, 1986. The NEP also focuses on providing vocational education to students and bring change in the educational system in India.

Under the NEP the students will not be forced to study any particular language. They will be taught in their regional languages until class 5. The 10+2 structure of education will be replaced with 5+3+3+4.

This policy will reduce the extra curriculum burden on students. Also, the breakfast will be provided under the Midday Meal Scheme

Enforcement of NEP 2020

The Ministry of Education in India has asked for suggestions from teachers on the implementation of the NEP 2020. An online competition for teachers will also be held by the Ministry which will focus on the ‘Preparation of Communication Material’.

The teachers who will participate in this competition will prepare communication material on different themes of NEP 2020 that will be related to education at school level. The 10 best-selected entries out of these will then be sent to NCERT for National Level Selection.  The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) stated that these entries will be used by the Ministry of Education in future.
