IMG

We all know that this world has come to a standstill due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Many people have succumbed to this deadly disease and some are still recovering from it. In addition our daily lives have changed a lot and the use of masks and handwashes has become the new normal so that the spread of coronavirus could be contained. With the persisting global devastation caused by COVID-19, researchers in India and across the world are focusing on developing vaccine for it as soon as possible.

Human Clinical Trials for Covid-19 Vaccine in India

The world is in dire need for a vaccine to fight this deadly virus and India being the largest producer of vaccines in the world is working towards this goal. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has stated that human clinical trials for Covid-19 vaccine are taking place across India. Around 1,000 volunteers are being used in the trial of the two indigenously developed vaccines which have been sanctioned by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI).

Vaccines Sanctioned by DCGI

The two vaccines sanctioned by the DCGI include one developed by Bharat Biotech International Ltd. in collaboration with the ICMR and another one by Zydas Cadila Healthcare Ltd.

The two vaccines got clearance for the early phase human trials only after they were tested successfully on rats, mice and rabbits and results of the same were reported to the DCGI.

India wants its two vaccines to be available in the market as soon as possible so that the transmission of the virus could be controlled and is looking into that there is no delay in regulatory clearances for these vaccines.

Though some medicines are being used to treat patients who have tested positive for coronavirus, in many cases these medicines were found to be not so effective. This has created the demand for the development of vaccine on an urgent basis. However, the development of vaccines for Covid-19 will take time and we cannot say for sure, when the vaccines will be available for common man. So, till the time these vaccines become available in the market it is very important that people follow all the safety protocols issued by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The Safety Protocols by the World Health Organization (WHO):

1. Maintaining social distance by maintaining at least 1-metre distance from one another to avoid getting infected from anyone coughing or sneezing.

2. Wearing mask on a mandatory basis.

3. Cleaning hands with the alcohol based hand rub or sanitizer.

4. Avoiding crowded places.

5. Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces frequently.

In addition to following these safety protocols you should try your best to avoid getting outside to minimize your chances of being exposed to the virus. So, remain at home and remain safe.
