The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic can be felt everywhere and specially in the education sector where schools had been shut down since March 2020 to contain the spread of the disease. The closure of schools across the nation due to the lockdown has affected the education of the students, who are not able to go their schools and complete their syllabus. After this long break, the Union Home Ministry (MHA) has finally issued Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the reopening of schools for students in classes 9-12 from September 21, 2020.

Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) Furnished by the MHA

The MHA has issued the SOPs, which includes a list of several health and safety measures that ensure that students can attend classes safely and don't lose out on their academics.

Under these SOPs, the students of 9th to 12th will be given the option of attending the classes remotely/virtually or physically only on a voluntary basis for guidance from their teachers. For this, they will require to get a written permission of parent/guardian.

The guidelines also state that alternate arrangements in place of the biometric mode of attendance, should be made by the administration of the school. This will facilitate contactless attendance and will therefore be safe for students and prevent from the coronavirus infection.

Physical Distancing Norms for Schools

The schools will be required to follow the physical distancing norms in classrooms and also staffrooms.

The norms state that physical distancing of at least 6 feet need to be followed by all those present in school including teachers, students and other staff members. The places where physical distancing will be maintained include staff rooms, office areas, and other places like libraries, cafeterias, etc.)

Under these SOPs, activities which can cause overcrowding will be prohibited such as organizing of assemblies, sports events etc.

The usage of face masks and washing of hands with soap and water will be mandatory for all students and staff.

The guidelines also state that only those schools which are outside the containment zones will be allowed to open. Moreover, students, teachers and employees residing in containment zones will be prohibited from attending the school.

Students, teachers and employees shall also be advised not to visit areas coming under containment zones.
