Students up to class 5 will now learn in regional languages in Assam
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke in great length in his Independence speech on the new education policy that has been recently introduced in the country after a long period of 34 years. Now the Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma seems to be the frontrunner in implementing the directives of the new policy. In his Independence day speech too, the education minister announced the govt's decision to make Assamese and several other regional languages compulsory as medium of instruction in all schools in Assam irrespective of their education boards. English as a medium of instruction can be introduced from class 6. The announcement is likely to be one of the first steps taken to transform the education in the state of Assam.
Important points to keep in mind:
- The newly introduced NEP 2020 also promotes regional languages to be used as medium of instruction
- Announcement by Mr Sarma applicable for classes till 5th in Assam
- English can be introduced as medium of instruction from class 6 onwards
- English medium schools to teach in Assamese, Bodo, Tiwa, Rabha, or other regional languages
- A task force under the state government will ensure a smooth implement the New Education Policy by December 2020.
- The education minister has also recently announced to gift free scooties to girl students who'd secure first division in class 12 board exams under the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council
