Why CBSE’s decision to discontinue use of term ‘fail’ matters

With the announcement of Class XII results the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has also decided to not use the term ‘Fail’ in a student’s marksheet.  The CBSE stated that it has decided to replace the term ‘Fail’ with “Essential Repeat’ from marksheets and other  written documents as this particular word ‘Fail’ puts a psychological and emotional burden on students.

Through the use of positive word like “Essential Repeat” the CBSE board believes there would not be a negative impact on the student’s psychology of being categorised as a failure. The term “Fail” shows that one cannot succeed again in life, it is in some way humiliating for a student, which may affect him psychologically, but using a positive word would provide a constructive feedback to a student that he can succeed in his next attempts.

Constructive Feedback for Students

Many educationalboards and institutes have been using the word ‘Fail’ for a long time in mark sheets of students who fail to get required marks in the exams or tests. The CBSE’s decision can be seen in a positive light and shows that students will still have a chance to repeat a year. This decision shows that the CBSE is taking a more considerate approach towards students.

Not being able to pass board exams does not mean that you will fail in life also but when it is written on paper and given to the student, it stays with them for life. It has an ever lasting impact on students, who sometimes take drastic steps like suicide to overcome their grief, which is major drawback for our society and education system. This step might also help reduce student suicides and the parents will also not put pressure on their children.

With the rising number of suicide cases by school children every years, this decision of the CBSE comes as a major relief to students as they will have less psychological impact of the exam results on their life. The students will feel less hurt despite failing the exams and would feel more motivated of clearing the exams in the next attempt.

Other Boards’ Take on this Development

As per the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB), controller examinationsJ. R. Mehrok, the decision of the CBSE is a good one and with time better words come and society moves ahead.
